Topic 2.3- Sound and Ultrasound

?
What type of waves are sound waves?
Sound waves are longitudinal waves
1 of 11
What do sound waves cause?
Sound waves cause vibrations in a medium, which are detected as sound
2 of 11
What is the range of human hearing?
The range of human hearing is between about 20Hz and 20,000Hz
3 of 11
What is the pitch of a sound determined by?
The pitch of a sound is determined by it's frequency
4 of 11
What is the loudness of a sound determined by?
The loudness of a sound is determined by it's amplitude
5 of 11
What can sound waves be?
Sound waves can be reflected (causing echoes) and diffracted
6 of 11
What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound is acoustic (sound) energy, in the form of waves with a frequency above the upper limit of hearing for humans
7 of 11
What can ultrasound be produced by?
Electronic systems can be used to produce ultrasound waves
8 of 11
What happens when ultrasound waves meet a boundary between two different media, and what can this be used for?
Ultrasound waves are partially reflected when they meet a boundary between two different media. The time taken for the reflections to reach a detector can be used to determine how far away such a boundary is
9 of 11
How can the distance between interfaces in various media be calculated?
Distance = Wave Speed x Time Taken
10 of 11
How can ultrasound waves be used?
Ultrasound waves can be used in medicine- for pre-natal scanning and the removal of kidney stones
