What are the properties of a good gas exchange surface?
Large surface area, short diffusion distance, a large difference in concentration.
1 of 5
What is Fick's law?
Rate of diffusion is proportional to the surface area of the gas exchange surface multiplied by the difference in concentration divided by the surface area.
2 of 5
What are the properties of the gas exchange surfaces in the lungs.
The alveoli have a large surface area, there are many capillaries around the alveoli, the capillaries and alveoli have thin walls for a short diffusion distance between alveoli air and capillaries.
3 of 5
What maintains the concentration gradient?
The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries at all times which maintains the concentration gradient.
4 of 5
Why do large organisms require more gas exchange?
To meet metabolic rate, as there is a small surface area to volume ratio.
