Topic 2-Cells And Control

?
Mitosis (I.P.M.A.T.C)
1) INTERPHASE- to prepare for cells division, each chromosome is copied. 2)PROPHASE-The nuclear membrane breaks down. 3)METAPHASE-The chromosomes line up in the centre of the cell 4)ANAPHASE- cell fibres pull the chromosmes apart.

Mitosis (I.P.M.A.T.C) (continued)
5)TELOPHASE- the chromosomes move to different sides of the cell 6)CYTOKINESIS- the cells begin to split in two.

Stem Cells
Cells differentiate to become specialised cells. Undifferentiated cells are called stem cells.Stem cells are found in early human embryos.

Meristems
In plants the only cells which divide by mitosis are found in plant tissue called meristems. Meristem tissue is found in the areas of a plant that are growing e.g the tips of the roots and shoots. They produce unspecialised cells thats are able to di

Stem Cells In Medicine
Scientists have extracted stem cells from early human embryo and growing them. Doctors use adult stem cells to cure some diseases.

Sensory Neuron's
They carry signals from receptors to the spinal cord or brain.
6 of 10
Motor Neuron's
They carry signals to the parts of our bodies which move.
7 of 10
Relay Neuron's
They carry signals from sensory to motor neuron's

What are synapses?
The connection between two neuron's is called a synapse. The nerve signal is transferred by chemicals called neurotransmitters, which diffuse (move) across the gap. The neurotransmitters then set off a new electrical signal in the next neuron.....

What are synapses? (continued)
The transmission of a nerve impulse is very fast, but is slowed down a bit because the diffusion of neurotransmitters across the gap takes time.
