What is the relationship between heart rate and exercise intensity?
Linear relationship between heart rate and exercise intensity.
1 of 9
What causes increased muscle blood flow during exercise?
Vasodilation of arterioles due to release of CO2, Pi, H+ and K+ from muscle during exercise. Also reduced O2. Precapillary sphincters regulate flow - open capillaries and flow increases during exercise
2 of 9
Why does the distribution of cardiac output to the heart increase proportionately to exercise intensity?
Becasue the stroke volume increases to a constant during exercise while the heart rate increases linearly
3 of 9
What is artio-venous oxygen difference?
The difference in the oxygen content of the blood between the arterial blood and venous blood. It is an indication of how much oxygen is removed from the blood in capillaries as the blood circulates the body.
4 of 9
What is the relationship between ventilation and exercise intensity?
Ventilation increases linearly with work rate up to lactate threshold. Ventilation increases more rapidly after lactate threshold.
5 of 9
What is end diastolic Volume?
Volume of blood in the right and/or left ventricle at the end load or filling in (diastole)
6 of 9
What are the two causes of increased stroke volume?
Increased myocardial contraction force and increased venous return
7 of 9
What causes heart rate to increase during endurance exercise?
Decreased parasympathetic input to the SA node (from rest to about 100 beats/min) and increased sympathetic input to the SA node (from about 100 beats/min to HR max)
8 of 9
What is venous return?
The flow of blood back to the heart
