1. To increase fitness: (1/7)
It can increase fitness levels, muscles are strengthened and become more flexible - becoming toned. Excercising expends energy - uses calories, weightloss.

2. To help the individual 'feel good' :
It produces seratonin the 'feel good' hormone - good for heart and lungs, muscles and bones aswell as mind. Improve fitness and body shape. Can help with low self esteem.

3. To relieve stress and tension:
Provides a distraction from daily life - to relieve stress and tension, work, school and family pressures.

4. To increase self-esteem and confidence:
Overcoming challenges, a sense of achievement, increases self-esteem and confidence.

5. To improve health:
Physically fitter people tend to cope better with illness. Not only cold and flu but scientists also believe with more serious illnesses. Excercise contributes to good health.

Practice physical activity for enjoyment.

e.g. The London Marathon, can seem like a daunting prospect and so is a tough mental challenge - running 26 miles.

1. Cooperation
Many sports are played in teams, working in groups helps to improve teamwork and cooperation which are often needed in everday life.

2. Competition
It is physicological 'mental' preperation and getting away from the stresses of life. When competing most people put their stresses from daily life aside to concerntrate.

3. For a physical challenge:
It allows for a physical challenge which can be very satisfying e.g. an adult who hasn't done it since leaving school - it can be very daunting.

4. Aesthetic appreciation:
The observer who appreciates the performer. Sometimes the performer knows when something just feels right. Normally found in dancing and gymnastics.

5. Development of friendships and social mixing:
Involvement with other people. Participants get to know a wide variety of people, training alone requires motivation and discipline.
