Topic 1: Tectonic Processes and Hazards

?
What is tephra?
Tephra releases material such as rock fragments into the atmosphere it can vary in size from bombs to find dust which can start fires and affect visibility and air travel.
1 of 9
What are lava flows?
Lava flows are flowing of lather down an area which causes buildings to burn and become destroyed.
2 of 9
What are volcanic gases?
Volcanic gases are associated with explosive eruptions the mix normally includes water vapour, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen and carbon monoxide it is dangerous as it is colourless and odourless which can accumulate in valleys undetected by people.
3 of 9
How many secondary impacts for volcanoes are there?
There are two secondary impacts of volcanoes.
4 of 9
What is the first secondary impact?
The first secondary impact is lahars. These are volcanic mudflows composed of relatively fine sand and silt material the degree of hazard varies depending on the steepness of slopes the volume of material and particle size.
5 of 9
What is the second secondary impact ?
The second secondary impact is a Jökulhlaups. These are glacial outburst floods which caused mainly erosion and deposition causing floods and subglacial lake beneath.
6 of 9
What is a hazard?
A hazard is a perceived natural or geophysical event that has the potential to threaten both life and property.
7 of 9
What is a disaster?
A disaster is the realisation of a hazard when it causes a significant impact on a vulnerable population.
8 of 9
Which model shows the interaction between hazards, disaster and human vulnerability?
The model that shows the interaction between hazards disaster and human vulnerability is s model.
