What antihypertensive drugs? Give examples.
These are drugs which reduce the hypertension (blood pressure) this will reduce the likelihood of getting a cardiovascular disease. E.g. ace inhibitors, calcium channel blockers and diuretics.
1 of 14
What does ace inhibitor stand for?
Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
2 of 14
What do ace inhibitors do?
The hormone angiotensin 2 causes the vasoconstricition of blood vessels which helps to control blood pressure. Ace reduces the synthesis of angiotensin 2 by preventing the hormone being produced by angiotensin 1. This therefore reduces blood pressure
3 of 14
What do calcium channel blockers do?
They block calcium channels which prevents calcium passing through the muscle cell. This prevents the contraction of muscles leading to the lowering of the blood pressure as vessels do not constrict.
4 of 14
What do diuretics do?
These increase the volume of urine produced by the kidneys ridding the body of excess fluids and salts. This decreases blood plasma and cardiac output which decreases blood pressure.
5 of 14
What is cardiac output?
Volume of blood expelled from the heat per minute.
6 of 14
What are the symptoms when taking ace inhibitors?
Dry cough, dizziness due to the lowering of blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms and a reduction in the function of kidneys (anyone with a kidney disease may have reduced risks of kidney failure).
7 of 14
What are the symptoms of calcium channel blockers?
Dizziness, swollen ankles due to the build up of fluid in the legs, abnormal heart rhythms, flushing red face and constipation.
8 of 14
What are the symptoms of diuretics?
Dizziness, nausea or muscle cramps.
9 of 14
What do statins do? What are the positives and negatives?
They inhibit the enzymes involved in the production of LDL production by the liver. They reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. But, they increase the risk of developing cancers like gastrointestinal and respiratory cancers.
10 of 14
What are the side effects when taking statins?
Tiredness, disturbed sleeping patterns, feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches and muscle weaknesses.
11 of 14
What does anticoagulant and platelet inhibitory drug treatment do?
The reduce platelet aggregation (clusters) and clotting.
12 of 14
Give examples of anticoagulant or platelet inhibitory drug treatment.
Aspirin (reduces the stickiness of platelets and the likelihood of clot formation) and clopidogrel.
13 of 14
What issues are there when taking a combination of aspirin and clopidogrel?
There is a risk of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract (the bleeding may outweigh the benefits).
