control systems- they monitor and control machinery in order to achieve a desired result

because they're dedicated to a single task

what is hardware?
the physical stuff that makes up your computer system (motherboard, CPU, monitor & printer)

the programmes or applications that a computer system runs (operating system, word processor, video game)

the brain of the computer system

what does the CPU do?
processes all of the data & instructions that make the system work

fetch instruction
Copy memory address from the program counter to the MAR. Copy the instruction stored in the MAR address to the MDR. Increment the program counter to point to the address of the next instruction, ready for the next cycle.

decode instruction
The instruction in the MDR is decoded by the CU. The Cu may then prepare for the next step.

execute system
The instruction is performed.
