Abstraction
Removal of water from rivers, lakes or groundwater for human us
1 of 31
Base flow
The part of a river's discharge fed by groundwater
2 of 31
Channel
The part of a valley floor occupied by the flowing water of s stream or river
3 of 31
Channel Network
The system of tributary streams that join increasingly large river channels in a drainage basin
4 of 31
Dam (& reservoirs)
A barrier (made of earth, concrete or stone) built across a valley to interrupt river flow and create a man-made lake (reservoir) to store the water
5 of 31
Discharge
The quality of water that passes a given point on a stream or river with-in a given period time.
6 of 31
Drainage bassin
The area drained by a river and its tributaries, bounded by a watershed
7 of 31
Erosion
The wearing down of the land by water, ice, wind and gravity
8 of 31
Flood
When river discharge exceeds river channel capacity and water spills out of the channel onto the floodplain and other areas
9 of 31
Flood plain
The part of a valley floor over which a river spreads during seasonal floods
10 of 31
Hydrograph
A graph on which variations in a river's discharge are plotted against time
11 of 31
Hydrological cycle
The unending movement of water between land, sea and atmosphere
12 of 31
Impermeable
Rocks that do not allow water to pass through them
13 of 31
Interlocking spurs
A series of ridges projecting out on alternate sides of a valley and around which a river winds its course
14 of 31
Landform
A physical feature with recognisable characteristics e.g. waterfalls, meander, formed by specific processes such as erosion and deposition
15 of 31
Levee
A bank of sediment formed along the edge of a river channel deposited by flood water
16 of 31
Mass-movement
The movement of weathered rock down slope without the direct action of running water
17 of 31
Meander
A pronounced bend in the river
18 of 31
Oxbow lake
A crescent shaped lake which form when a meander bend is cut off from the main river channel
19 of 31
Precipitation
The deposition of moisture on the earth's surface, in the form of free, frost, rain, hail, sleet or snow.
20 of 31
River regime
The variation (seasonal pattern) on river discharge over the course of a year
21 of 31
Shortage/ Surplus
Areas where water supply is lower / higher that water demand from humans
22 of 31
Stores
Places within a system where materials or energy are held for a time
23 of 31
Streamflow
The flow of surface water in a well-defines channel
24 of 31
Transfer
Flows of water between stored in the hydrological cycle
25 of 31
Valley
A linear depression in the landscape formed by erosion usual with a river channel at its lowest point
26 of 31
Velocity (steam)
The speed of water flow in the river channel
27 of 31
Water quality
A measure of how fit for human consumption water is, Polluted water has a low water quality.
28 of 31
Watershed
The dividing line between one drainage basin and another.
29 of 31
Waterfall
A river landform created by erosion, where water drops steeply/vertically as it flows over a cliff like feature
30 of 31
Weathering
The chemical alteration and physical breakdown of rocks in situ.
