Who were the Thermidorians?
Individuals and groups who helped to overthrow Robespierre. Mixed group- members of the CPS and CGS, ex-terrorists and deputies from the Plain.

What did the Convention do to end the Terror?
Abolished the Revolutionary Tribunal. Released all suspects from prison. Repealed the Law of Prairial

What did they do regarding the CPS and CGS?
25% of the two committees had to be changed each month. Sixteen committees from the Convention took over.

What was the CPS's new role?
Running the war and diplomacy

What happened to the power around the country?
Commune was abolished. Power in local government passed to the moderates and property owners (in control before June 1793)

When did the Convention decide it would no longer play clerical salaries?
September 1794. Resulted in the separation of Church and State

What did the Separation of Church and State mean?
Refractory and constitutional priests, Protestants and Jews would be in free competition for support. Significant: first time in European country that the State had claimed neutral towards religious matters

21st February 1795
