What are core conditions?
attitudes that the nurse displays that show acceptance of the patient, valuing them as a human being of worth. there are 3 core conditions (empathy, conruence and unconditional postive regard)

what is empathy?
trying to understand the thoughts and feelings as the patient experiences them.

what is congruence?
this means the nurse is genuine and real. this is important as it allows service user and nurse to build a trusting relationship. it can help defeat negative attitudes that the patient may have. teh nurses 'realness' allows the patient to trust.

what is unconditonal positive regard?
this allows the patient to open up and speak without fear of being judged.

what is Egan's skilled helper model
a 3 stage model useful in helping people solve problems/develop opportunities. best used on issues in past/present

what is the goal of this model?
"to help people become better at helping themselves in everyday lives" thus emphasis is empowerment.

"what is going on?" "what do i want instead?" "how might i get to what i want?"
