Durkheim believed these to be objectives of reverence and worship within a religion. Leaving feelings of awe and wonder.

In basic societies and clans they worship an animla totem individual to their tribe. Durkheim believed that this is in turn worshiping society.

These are the values shared by the tribe or the society, and taking part in events as a group solidifies these values.

Durkheim believed that religion provides basic ideas of time and causation. E.G division of tribes started the idea of classification.

Criticisms of Durkheim
Just because Durkheim suggests that some clans use totems to represent society, it does not mean it is a universal idea.

His theory explains social integration within communities, and not larger multi-faith societies.
