What is visual perception?
Cognitive activity - active rather than passive process
1 of 10
Distal stimulus vs proximal stimulus
Distal stimulus is light entering the eye / Proximal stimulus is retinal image
2 of 10
What is evolutionary utility?
Survival/reproduction - identify objects that are behaviourally relevant from a distance without immediate contact - benefits survival as it prepares a response before it gets to us
3 of 10
What is vendical perception?
What you see is what you get
4 of 10
What is the early stage of visual perception?
Inverse problem: get from optical images of scenes back to knowledge of the objects that gave rise to them - invert the process by undoing optical transformations that happen during image formation - environment+its projective image not symmetrical
5 of 10
What did Gestalt propose about perception?
Perception is more than the addictive perception of visual elements or parts - the whole is more than the sum of our parts
6 of 10
What did Gibson find about optical arrays?
Optical arrays provide clues as to why we see the world - highly valuable yet vision is not as direct, it needs depth
7 of 10
What is the high level in visual perception?
Computational - specifies outline + limitations of the info processing required
8 of 10
What is the middle level in visual perception?
Algorithmic - requires us to describe in detail the representation of the input and output
9 of 10
What is the lowest level in visual perception?
Implementational - how the algorithm embodied into the physical system - different physical systems can implement the same computations
