What do sociologists mean by 'ideology'?
A worldview or set of beliefs (ideas or values). Includes negative aspects, mistaken ideas, those conceal interests, misleading people and irrational and closed to criticism.

Outline Neo-marxist (gramsci and Althusser) ideology;
Gramsci- ruling class ideolgical domination of society as hegemony, that working-class can develop and challenge ruling class hegemony. Althusser- reject idea of alienation as unscientific, an inadequate theory of religion.

See forms of religion as assisting not hindering the development of class consciousness and, religion doesnt function effectively as an ideology to control the population.

What is Hegemony?
The way in which the ruling class use ideas such as religion to maintain control, never guranteed.

What is pluralism and what is religious pluralism?
Pluralism- society with different cultures, religions or politcal parties. Religious pluralism- undermines religion's plausibility as people can be sceptical on what truth is religion (Berger).

Outline Liberal feminist ideology? (Oakley)
focuses on women’s ability to maintain their equality through their own actions and choices. Liberal feminists argue that society holds the false belief that women are, by nature, less intellectually and physically capable then men.

Criticism- Overly optimistic and Liberal believe that changing the law will benfeit the women when in fact it is broder changes that will (culture etc).

Outline Radical Feminist Ideology (Brownmilller, Greer);
believe that women can free themselves only when they have done away with what they consider an inherently oppressive and dominating patriarchal system. Radical feminists feel that there is a male-based authority and power structure and that it is re

Brownmiller- they focus on how patriarchal power is exercised through personal relationships (sexual/physical violence) controlling all women. *notes fear of **** is powerfu deterrent against women going out alone at night.

e evaluations/criticisms of Radical Feminists;
Critics claim Radical feminists simplify the issues and therefore tend to suggest that men are the victimizers and women the victims. No explanation of why female subordination has different forms in different societies.

Outline Marxist feminist ideology (Barret and Ansley);
Agree that women's subordination within family perfrom economic functions for capitalism. Barret- we must give more emphasis to women's consciousness and motivations, and to the role of ideology in maintaing their oppression.

Correct in weight to relationship of capitalism and womens subordination. But, fails to explain women's sybordination in non-capitalist societies, and dont explain why men and men cant perform capitalsim as benefits capitalism unpaid domestic labour

Black feminism is a school of thought which argues that sexism, class oppression, gender identity and racism are inextricably bound together. The way these concepts relate to each other is called intersectionality.
