What is relative poverty?
People who do not have enough income to participate fully in the society in which they live. It will vary according to the standard of living at the time

How does the UK government and EU define the poverty line?
60% of the median household income, after housing costs have been paid; households receiving less than this are classified as in poverty - amounts to £250

How does the World Bank measure extreme poverty?
All those living on US$1.25 a day or less - 1 billion people

What is a common measurement of poverty in developing countries?
All those living on $2 or less per day - 2.2 billlion people

How does the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index measure poverty?
It brings together 10 indicators including safe water, sanitation, child mortality, education and health

What is the Gini coefficient?
It provides an objective measure of income inequality and can range from 0 to 1. A coefficient of 0 would be income is shared equally and 1 would mean one person in the population has all the income
