What is recruitment and selection?
Filling job vacancies by defining the job, attracting suitable candidates and selecting those best suited to fill the role

What is labour turnover?
The number of staff leaving a company as a percentage of those employed

When employees learn new skills or develop the skill hey already have in order to improve performance

Initial training to familiarise newly appointed workers with key aspects of their jobs and their employer eg: health and safety etc

Where employees leave the place of work to receive instruction either within the firm or by using an external organisation

Where the employees acquire or develop skills without leaving the place of work eg: being guided through an activity by a more experienced member of staff

Related to abilities and qualifications and qualities needed, (essentials and desirables)

What are the advantages of internal recruitment?
Employees are already known to the business, promotion opportunities can be motivating for employees, usually quicker and easier, cheaper

What are the disadvantages of internal recruitment?
May reduce amount of new ideas within the business, leaves a vacancy elsewhere, not always possible depending on workforce size, restricted amount of candidates

What are the selection methods?
Interviews, tests, trial periods, psychometric tests

What does the selection method depend on?
Complexity of job, timer period (temp or permanent), management or lower level

Reasons for training?
Changes in law, new employees, employees have been promoted, new technology, policies change etc

What are the benefits of training?
Increases productivity, improves quality of work which reduces waste and costs, means employees are more flexible (useful with absences) good for motivation, reduce accidents, creates good reputation

What are the advantages of on the job training?
No replacement/cover is needed, work is stopped, cheaper, more realistic, work wit an experienced employee

What are the disadvantages of on the job training?
Not as many opportunities, pressurised, not as many peoples trained at once, people reluctant to train people, pick up bad habits
