The Variety of Life

?
RESPIRATION
the chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy. FOOD + OXYGEN = ENERGY + WATER + CARBON DIOXIDE
1 of 19
GROWTH
A permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size or both.
2 of 19
MOVEMENT
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place.
3 of 19
EXCRETION
Removal from organisms of toxic materials, the waste products of metabolism (chemical reactions in cells including respiration) and substances in excess of requirements.
4 of 19
NUTRITION
the process of taking in nutrients which are organic substances and mineral ions, containing raw materials or energy for growth and tissue repair, absorbing and assimilating them.
5 of 19
MONOCOTYLEDONS
Only one 'seed leaf. Long thin leaves with parallel veins. E.G. Grasses
6 of 19
DICOTYLEDONS
Two 'seed leafs'. Broad Leafs with a network of veins. E.G. Trees
7 of 19
INSECTS
Three body parts- head, thorax and abdomen. Three pairs of legs. Usually 1 or 2 pairs of wings.
8 of 19
CRUSTACEANS
Many segments, usually each with legs, claws of feelers. Breathe via gills as live in water. Exoskeleton particularly hard for protection.
9 of 19
ARACHNIDS
Two body parts, eight legs and no wings. All have piercing jaws since all are predators.
10 of 19
MYRIAPODS
Long, thin body with many segments for moving easily through soil and leaf litter. Antennae as sense organs in dark habitats
11 of 19
ANNELIDS
Many segments on long body. Body covered with mucus to conserve water. Many are hermaphrodite. Usually have chetae (bristles) for movement.
12 of 19
NEMATODES
No segment- long cylindrical body
13 of 19
MOLLUSCS
Have a soft body, with a muscular foot used for movement. Often have eyes on retractable tentacles. Soft body is often enclosed in a shell made of calcium carbonate (protection from predators/ drying out)
14 of 19
FISH
Scales, Fins, Eyes and Lateral line.
15 of 19
AMPHIBIANS
Moist Skin, Four Limbs, Eyes and ears.
16 of 19
REPTILE
Lays eggs on Land. Dry scaly skin, Four Limbs (not snake), Eyes and ears
17 of 19
BIRDS
Very few are aquatic, Feather (scales on legs), Two wings two legs, Eyes and ears.
18 of 19
MAMMALS
Very few are aquatic, Fur or Hair, four limbs, Eyes and ears, *******.
