Universality
Universality is identified by Kant as a key feature of aesthetic experience and as something that applies to all people at all times and all places.

Intrinsic value
Has value irrespective of possible usefulness. Eg if you believe the purpose of education is to get good job-believe education has instrumental value. If you believe education is valuable in itself then you believe it has intrinsic value.

Instrumental value
Has benefit because of something it will provide, eg entertainment or wealth.

Romanticism
Important artistic movement of 18th century. Romantics sought to eulogise nature, mankind and the emotions. Eg Shelley, Beethoven, Goethe.

Catharsis
Literally means 'purging' or 'cleansing'. Aristotle identified this as a key feeling that art inspires in us.

Aesthetic appreciation
Particular way of appreciating the formal elements in art which many argue are different from an intellectual or emotional approach
