How is a drug trial carried out? There are 3 steps in this process.
1) The drug is tested out using computer cells and human cells grown in the laboratory. 2) They are tested on animals and monitored for any side effects. 3) They are tested in clinical trials on healthy volunteers - Side effects may occur.

What is the Placebo Effect and how do Double Trials aim to minimise it?
The placebo effect is when a drug should really have positive effects, rather than people feeling better simply because they expect to. Neither doctors or patients are told which is the Placebo until the end of the trial.

What are Statins and how do they work?
Statins are drugs used to lower the level of LDL Cholesterol in the blood. They work by blocking the chemical in the liver that produces cholesterol.

Diabetic people, People with a family history of heart attacks, and increasing age. They may result in liver failure and skeletal muscle damage.

What is a Thalidomide and what problem did it cause?
It was a medical drug that was originally developed as a sleeping pill, but was discovered to stop morning sickness in pregnancy. However it caused seriously deformed limbs to new born babies in the 1950's-60's.

To treat Leprosy and Bone Cancer. It is heavily regulated.

Beta-blockers calm the nerves - Snooker players. EPO increases red blood cell count - Cyclists. Diuretics reduce weight and produce extra urine - Jockeys.
