Horace Wells
1845- Used nitrous oxide as an anaesthetic

William Morton
1846- An American dentist, used ether when removing teeth. It was also used for operations such as removing tumours.

James Simpson
1847- Discovered the anaesthetic properties of chloroform and successfully introduced it for general medical use.

Queen Victoria
1853- Was given chloroform for the birth of her last born son Prince Leopold.

Hannah Greener
1848- Was the first patient to die from chloroform poisoning during a toenail removal operation.

Louis Pasteur
1861- Published his germ theory; There are bacteria in the air which cause rotting and infection such as gangrene.

Joseph Lister
1867- A scottish surgeon, experimented with carbolic acid spray to produce the first antiseptic after reading about Pasteurs germ threory. 1880- Used sterilised catgut for internal stitches.

1870's
Some surgeons stopped using chloroform as they were concerned about the high death rate (1 in 2,500 operations). They returned to using ether mixed with nitrous oxide.

Robert Koch
1878- Discovered the bacterium which caused septicaemia (blood poisoning)

William Halstead
1889- An American surgeon, introduced the wearing of sterilised rubber gloves and surgical masks to further prevent any chance of infection.

Karl Landsteiner
1901- Discovered the three types of blood group which meant that safe and effective blood transfusions could be carried out.

Albert Hustin
1914- Discovered sodium citrate could be added to blood to prevent it clotting. This also meant that blood could be stored for several weeks.

Wilhelm Rontgen
1895- A German scientist, discovered x-rays.

Reuben Ottenburg
1907- Performed the first blood transfusion using blood typing.

Antiseptic surgery
There are germs in the operating theatre but surgeons use methods, such as carbolic spray, to stop open wounds being infected.

Aseptic surgery
Cleaning and sterilising methods prevent there being any germs in the operating theatre to infect wounds.

John Collins Warren
1846- An American surgeon, removed a neck tumour using ether as an anaesthetic.

Sir Humphry Davy
1799- Discovered that nitrous oxide (laughing gas) reduced pain.

1884- Discovered that cocaine is a local anaesthetic
