What was Sputnik (1957) and The 'Tsar Bomba' (1961)?
Sputnik: The first artificial Earth satellite launched by the USSR to show they were scientifically superior to the US. The Tsar Bomba: AN602 hydrogen bomb created by the USSR and was the most powerful Nuclear weapon at its time.

Refugee problem facing Khrushchev?
Nearly 2000 refugees a day were fleeing to the west through to West Berlin which showed the communist East were weakening.

What did the refugee problem force Khrushchev to do and how did the USA respond?
Krushchev demanded that the US left West Berlin in 6 months which Kennedy refused and guaranteed West Berlin freedom. ON August 13th Khrushchev closed the border between the East and West and began building the Berlin Wall.

What were the four summits?
Geneva (May 1959) Camp David (September 1959) Paris (May 1960) and Vienna (June 1961). None of the summits came to a solution however neither the USSR or the USA would back down.

What was Khrushchev's ultimatum and how did the US respond?
Khrushchev's ultimatum: Giving the US 6 months to withdraw their troops from West Berlin. Kennedy's response: Activating 150,000 reservists and increasing defense expenditures in preparation for a potential conflict over the future of the city.

'Ich bin ein Berliner' a ground breaking speech in Berlin offering American solidarity to the citizens of West Berlin.
