What are the seven life processes?
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition
1 of 8
Briefly describe what movement involves.
Animals use energy to move their whole body from place to place. Plants can only move parts of their body. They move towards light and water, and they do this by growing, so it occurs slowly.
2 of 8
Briefly describe what respiration involves.
The process of releasing energy from food or stored chemicals in cells for immediate use by the organism. Respiration usually needs oxygen.
3 of 8
Briefly describe what sensitivity involves.
Plants and animals need information about the surrounding environment to be able to survive and carry out the other seven life processes. They respond to different stimuli, although plants respond much slower.
4 of 8
Briefly describe what growth involves.
Animals usually reach a certain size and then stop growing, whereas plants carry on growing their whole lives.
5 of 8
Briefly describe what reproduction involves.
Animals and plants need to be able to make new offspring so the species continues. Reproduction can be sexual or asexual.
6 of 8
Briefly describe what excretion involves.
Excretion is getting rid of toxic waste. It could be a gas (Carbon Dioxide), special compounds (Urea) or water. Plants excrete their waste products and toxins into their leaves, which they then drop during the winter.
7 of 8
Briefly describe what nutrition involves.
All living organisms must take in energy to stay alive. Plants take in simple compounds and make complicated compounds. Animals eat other plants and animals and get complex compounds from them.
