Who were they?

Sturmabteilung (SA) - Storm Division (a Nazi parliamentary organisation. Set up to intimidate opponents. Distinctive brown uniform = Them being named the 'Brown Shirts'.

Strengths of the SA?

Had helped Hitler rise to power. Hoped to gain, some unemployed and wanted a job. Leaders wanted influential jobs. Rohm wanted to merge the SA with Army.

Roles of the SA?

To scare/intimidate Hitlers political opponents, especially the Communists. So Hitler could rise to power through Nazi party.

Who did they attract?

Ex-soldiers. Young men who wanted violence and excitment.

What did the SA do?

Hitler wanted to become President, aswell as be Chancellor. He could only do this with the support from the Army, however they wouldent help unless the SA were destroyed as they were 10x bigger than the army. Killed them at the Night of Long Knives.
