What has been happening since the last rebellion?
Elizabeth continued with the policy of plantations; She was keen on plantations in Ulster, Connaught and Munster.

Why were the plantations in Connaught and Munster so controversial?
new owners were raising rents to Irish tenants, bribing juries, setting up Protestant churches and generally upsetting the Irish; Elizabeth had also set up garrisons to contain local distrubances

Hugh O’Neill was the son of Shane and grandson of Con; raised by the earl of Leicester and loyal Anglo-Irish lord

Why did he begin to feel unhappy?
Felt he wasn't being sufficiently rewarded; overambitious; lost influence (Leicester and Walsingham had died); asked for permission to govern the whole of Ulster but Elizabeth had refused

Under what cause did he start the rebellion?
Nationalism and attempted a nation wide rebellion

Why was he particularly dangerous?
because he had previously been loyal and so built up lots of resources. He was also therefore able to raise a lot of support

Who did he look to for support?
He became the head of a confederation of Anglo-Irish lords, Gallic-Irish lords and even some Protestant English. He also looked to Spain for help. 1597 – ten years since the Armarda – Phillip sends small load of ships (weather stops them)

She underestimates the rebellion - biggest failing - doesn't send enough men, unwise decisions (Essex)

Date, name and result of famous battle?
The Battle of Yellow Ford 14th August 1598 where 4,000 English were soundly defeated by Irish rebels - hundreds of people died and the Munster plantations were swept away

What does Essex do?
1599 he arrives with 16,000 troops and 1,300 cavalry but he's a terrible leader

Who replaces Essex? What does he manage to do?
Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy in 1600; he pushes Tyrone back to Ulster – reclaiming some of Munster

What surprisingly turns up?
3,400 Spanish crack troops turn up – which is a surprised for both sides

What happens next?
Siege of Kinsale; 2 Oct 1601 - 3 Jan 1602 (12,000 English v. 6,000 irish and 3,400 Spanish) Mountjoy defeats him soundly and manages to gain the rest of Munster

How does it finally end?
6 days after Elizabeth's death (24 March 1603) he surrenders to James I and is made Chief Lord of Ulster
