What concept does the Problem of evil challenge?
The concept of an all loving, all powerful Creator God of Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Summary of problem of evil:
God created world ex nihilo thus he is omnipotent. He could create evil-free univ. He knows everything Omnisc, he must thus know how to stop evil. He is all loving- he would not wish for his creation to suffer. However evil and suffering do exist.

Other name for problem of evil?
Inconsistent triad. One attitribute must go, all loving or all powerful or evil etc.

Basic of Augustinian Theodicy:
A punishment from God- St Augustine believed that humans carry the sin of Adam and must bear the consequences of his wrong-doing.

God is just and allows suffering to happen as a punishment for human sin. Yet as an all-loving god he sent Jesus to die so those how believed could be saved.

What are critisims of Augustine's theodicy?
German theologian Schleirmacher said he was wrong.

Why did Schleirmacher say he was wrong?
Because if God created world good it could not go bad. If humans were able to choose evil- it must have pre-existed. If world was not perfect at start- G is to blame for suffering and evil. In nature its a dog-eat-dog world. god made it that way.
