Creed
Means belief and is a concise, formal and authorised summary of Christian belief and teaching (e.g. Apostles (390) and Nicene (374)).

Kingdom of God
Is the Age to Come and in Jesus' teaching referred to a future transformation of this world.

Incarnation
Refers to God as Word (the second person of the Trinity) becoming fully human in the person of Jesus Christ.

Atonement
Means literally at one ment and in Christian terms is the process by which God reconciles the world to himself by removing the barrier of sin.

In Greek means "arrival" and usually refers to the return of Christ at the coming of the Kingdom and final judgement. This is sometimes referred to as the Second Coming.

Lessing's Ditch
Is the principle of "proof of power" that unless a Christian claim can be rationally justified then it should be discarded.

Messianic Secret
Describes the number of occasions in Mark's Gospel where Jesus says he's not the messiah. These were added after Jesus' death by the Gospel writer to explain why Jesus was not considered to be the messiah in his lifetime.

Refers to the various scholarly attempts to discover the historical Jesus.

Kerygma
In Greek means "preaching" and is used by scholars to refer to the earliest message of Christianity.

Demythologising
The process which myths or metaphors used to express deep religious or philosophical experiences of the world are stripped of imagery to recover their original existential experience.

Category Mistake
Occurs when factual statements are confused with value judgments, or historical knowledge is confused with faith knowledge.

Exodus
Is the liberation of the Hebrew slaves from Egypt led by Moses.

Doceticism
Is the view that Jesus as a divine being only appeared to be human. It is rejected by mainstream Christianity as it suggests that if Jesus was not fully human, then his death for the sins of the world is false.

Was founded by Robert Funk and John Crossan in 1985. Scholars debate and vote on which sayings of Jesus from the Gospels and the Gospel of Thomas (Not in NT) they think are authentic and then publish the results.

Were an ancient Greek philosophical movement who taught that the good or virtuous life should be lived in accordance with nature and not by social convention.
