They are COLOURLESS GASES at room temperature so can't be seen, they are INERT (unreactive) because they have FULL outer shells and they are also NON-FLAMMABLE.

How were the noble gases discovered?
Scientists realised that the density of nitrogen made in chemical reactions was different to the density of nitrogen taken from air, meaning that air had other gases mixed in with it as well.

What are some useful everyday uses of the noble gases?
Argon is used in filament lamps as it is non-flammable and stops the hot filament from burning away. Helium is used in balloons as it is less dense than air so it makes the balloons float.
