The Nervous System

Biology Revision Cards

?
What is a receptor?
Receptors are groups of specialised cells that can detect changes in the environment called stimuli.
1 of 11
Where are receptors usually found?
Receptors are often located in the sense organs, such as the ear, eye and skin. Each organ has receptors sensitive to particular kinds of stimulus.
2 of 11
What does the Central Nervous System consist of?
The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord.
3 of 11
What happens when a Receptor is stimulated?
When a Receptor is stimulated it sends a signal along the nerve cells, also called neurones, to the brain. The brain then coordinates the response.

What are the Skin receptors sensitive to?
Pain, Temperature, Touch and Pressure
5 of 11
What are the tongue receptors sensitive to?
Chemicals in food
6 of 11
What are the Nose receptors sensitive to?
Chemicals in the Air
7 of 11
How does The Infoemation get back from your CNS to your effector organs?
After the CNS coordinates the information it sends impulses back out alone special cells called motor neurons to your effector organs which then respond
8 of 11
What order does it to in to get to the CNS and back?
Receptor - Sensory neuron - CNS - Motor neuron - Effector
9 of 11
Why are there more receptors in your fingertips than the rest of your skin?
There are more receptors in you fingertips as you use them more than the rest of your skin to touch things and pick things up, Having more receptors means you can feel better
10 of 11
What's the difference between a sensory neurone, a relay neurone and motor neurone?a
sensory neurones carry signals from receptors to the spinal cord and brain, relay neurones carry messages from one part of the CNS to another and motor neurones carry signals from the CNS to effectors
