Which areas are wavesused in?
Medical imaging, Communications, Scientific imaging, Seeing, Heat cameras.
1 of 16
What are the uses of waves?
Ultrasound build image by detecting reflected waves, mobile phones send and receive microwaves, light waves from stars creats image an is recorded electronically, light waves hit your retina an form an image, sense infrared from heat, tv remotes.
2 of 16
What is a prograssive wave?
A wave that carries energy and usually information from one place to another, without transferring any material.
3 of 16
How can you tell waves carry energy?
Electromagnetic waves cause things to heat up, X-rays and gamma rays knock electrons out of orbits, causing ionisation, Loud sounds make things vibrate, Waves power is used to generate electricity, source of wave loses energy.
4 of 16
Waht is displacement of a wave?
How far a point on the wave has moved from its undisturbed position.
5 of 16
What is amplitude?
Measures in meters it is the maximum displacement.
6 of 16
What is the wavelength?
Measured in meters it is the length of one wavefrom crest to crest or trough to trough.
7 of 16
What is the period of a wave?
Measured in seconds is the time taken for one vibration.
8 of 16
What is frequency?
Measured in hertz it is the number of vibrations per seconds a a point.
9 of 16
What is the phase difference?
The amount one wave lags behind another wave, measured in degrees or radians.
10 of 16
What is reflection?
When a wave is bounced back after hitting a boundary.
11 of 16
What is refraction?
When the wave chenges directingafter entering a different medium the wave changes direction because it has sped up or slowed down.
12 of 16
Frequency is the inverse of what?
Period
13 of 16
What is the formula and units for calculaing period?
Period= 1/Frequency, the units are 1Hz=1s-1
14 of 16
What is the formula for wave speed?
Speed= Distance moved/ time taken
15 of 16
What is the wave equation?
Speed= wavelengthxfrequency
