What was the status and role of serfs in society?
They had a low status in society, possibly the lowest-class in society. They are 'owned' by their landlords and the state.

What was the main difference between the obrok and the Barschina?
Obrok are those serfs who paid a fixed cash sum to state officials. Where the Barschina were those serfs who had to pay the landlord's feudal dues with their labour.

What do you understand by 'feudal dues'?
'feudal dues' is a system of hierarchy where the Tsar gives land to governors who will then divide these lands between landlords to give to serfs, in return the produce gets divided to be given between the hierarchy.

To what extent were the peasants exploited by (a) noble landlords
(a) the landowners kept the serf ignorant and used this to their advantage by having the serf cultivate the lands and serfs would also pay their landowners via giving them their produce whilst keeping only the necessary amount to themselves.

(b) the state exploits the serfs through the fact that they could demand money earned by a serf in the form of taxation.
