The menstrual cycle - STAGE 1
Day 1 is when bleeding starts. The lining of the uterus breaks down for about 4 days

STAGE 2
From day 4 to 14, the lining of the uterus builds up again into a thick spongy layer full of blood vessels, ready to receive a fertilised ovum (egg)

STAGE 3
An ovum develops and is released from the ovary at day 14

STAGE 4
The wall is then maintained for about 14 days until day 28. If no fertilised ovum has landed on the uterus wall by day 28, the spongy lining starts to break down and the whole cycle starts again

What does the hormone OESTROGEN do?
Causes the lining of the uterus to thicken and grow. Stimulates the release of an ovum at day 14

What does the hormone PROGESTERONE do?
Maintains the lining of the uterus. When the level of progesterone falls, the lining breaks down. If a woman becomes pregnant, the level of progesterone will stay high to maintain the lining of the uterus during the pregnancy

Pregnancy - what does the placenta do?
Let's the blood of the embryo and its mother get very close to allow the exchange of food, oxygen and waste

Amniotic fluid
The amnion membrane forms during pregnancy - this surrounds the embryo and is full of amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid protects the embryo against knocks and bumps
