What happens in the sample inlet?
Gases or Liquids are simply injected but solids are heated to vaporise them
1 of 10
What happens in the Ionisation Area?
A heated filament produces high-energy electrons, these electrons bombard any atoms or molecules in the sample and knock electrons out.
2 of 10
What is formed in the Ionisation Area?
Cations (positive ions) are formed
3 of 10
What happens in the Acceleration Area?
An electric field is used to accelerate any ions so that they all have the same kinetic energy.
4 of 10
Why is there a vacuum in the Drift Region?
So that ions do not collide with air molecules, which could change the direction of their flight path.
5 of 10
Do all Ions have the same kinetic energy?
YES!
6 of 10
Do heavier Ions Move through the drift region more slowly or quicker than light ions?
Heavier Ions move throughout the drift region more slowly than light ions.
7 of 10
Do light Ions reach the detector before heavier ones?
YES!
8 of 10
What does the computer do with the information?
Converts the information into a mass spectrum
9 of 10
What is detected after Fragmentation?
Positive Ions
