Kobe is on a minor fault called the Nojima Fault which lies on a Destructive Plate Margin. The Oceanic Crust - Philippine Plate is force downwards when it meets the Continental Crust-Eurasian Plate. The

Why was the Earthquake so damaging?
Because the earthquake lasted 20 seconds during the rush time therefore the ground moved 18cm horizontally the earthquakes focus was really close to the surface and the epicentre being so close to the Kobe.
