HideShow resource information

1 of 13
This theory suggests that aggression is a product of what?
the individual characteristics of the inmates.
2 of 13
What is a suitable IDA point for this theory?
Socially sensitive
3 of 13
Explain the relevant IDA point for this theory
the theory has negative implications such as labelling and could lead to a hands off approach to aggression in institutions.
4 of 13
What effect could the theory have on the inmates specifically? (IDA cont.)
when they are released from prison they may find it difficult to find a job as people may believe that they are aggressive due to the theory suggesting that aggressive behaviour is imported into prisons.
5 of 13
Name two pieces of supporting research for the theory
Poole and Regoli, Keller and Wang
6 of 13
What did Poole and Regoli find in their research?
that generally pre-institutional violence was the best indicator for inmate aggression regardless of the features of the institution.
7 of 13
How does the research by Poole and Regoli support the theory?
it shows that inmates have a pre-disposition to aggression and that their environment has little or not impact on their behaviour.
8 of 13
What did Keller and Wang find in their research?
that prison violence occured more frequently in the institutions which held maximum security inmates than those in lower security fascilities.
9 of 13
How does the research by Keller and Wang support the theory?
it shows that inmates with more aggressive behaviour outside of prison display higher levels in prison then those who committed less serious crimes.
10 of 13
What is an issue with both pieces of research? (AO3)
they both lack control over the variables as they are natural experiments, this means the results could have been influenced by a number of extraneous variables consequently lowering the internal validity.
11 of 13
What was an issue with the Keller and Wang research? (AO3)
the lack of control could mean that the results were simply due to the different conditions at the two facilities.
12 of 13
Are there any practical applications of the theory? (wider evaluation)
there are little or no practical applications for this theory as it has little supporting evidence. it should be combined with another theory such as power of the situation and dehumanizing labels.
