Where were the first European settlers ?
On the east coast

Many tribes were greatly reduced in numbers or wiped out . The Europeans then formed new states in these areas.

Because Columbus thought he had landed in the Indies in 1492

The 13 East Coast states began a War of Independence against rule by Britain .

The 13 states won their independence.

USA bought the area know as "Louisiana" from France ($15 million). This area was known as the Great Plains.

Area that stretches west from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.

The USA bought Florida from Spain . It now owned all the land east of Mississippi as well
