What is a culture?
A growth of microorganisms
1 of 11
What is a closed culture?
The growth of microorganisms in an environment where all conditions are fixed and contained. No new material is added and no waste products or organisms are removed
2 of 11
What happens during the lag phase?
1) Organisms are adjusting to the surroundings and conditions 2)The cells are active but not reproducing so the population size remains fairly constant
3 of 11
What happens during the log phase?
1) Population size doubles with each new generation as every individual has enough space and nutrients to reproduce
4 of 11
What happens during the stationary phase?
1)Nutrient levels decrease and waste products like carbon dioxide and other metabolites build up. 2)Individual organisms die at the same rate at which new individuals are produced
5 of 11
What happens during the death phase?
1) All the nutrients have been used up and the toxic waste product levels have increased, this leads to the death rate increasing above the reproduction rate. 2)Eventually all organisms will die in a closed system.
6 of 11
What are metabolites?
The products of metabolism
7 of 11
Name the two main types of metabolites
Primary and secondary
8 of 11
Define Primary metabolites
The substances produced by an organism as part of its normal growth
9 of 11
Define Secondary Metabolites
The substances produced by an organism thats not part of its normal growth
10 of 11
True or False, all microorganisms produce secondary products
FALSE! All microorganisms produce primary metabolites and only a few produce secondary metabolites
