Nuclear Family
A family consisting of an adult male and female with one or more children, own or adopted.

Extended Family
A family containing relatives in addition to the nuclear family. An extension of the nuclear family.

Reconstituted Family
A family in which one or both partners bring children from a previous relationship.

Cohabitation
Living together as a partnership without marriage.

Symmetrical Family
A nuclear family in which the roles of husband and wife are increasingly similar. It is home-centred, privatised and self-contained.

Modified Extended Family
A weaker version of the traditional extended family. Members don't usually share the same household. However, contact is regular and important services are often exchanged.

Kinship
Relationships based on biological or marital ties.

Lone Parent Family
A family unit headed by a mother or father only due to the loss of the other parent [i.e through separation, divorce, or death].

Beanpole Family
A family whose living members come from many generations, but with few members in each generation.

Patriarchy
A social system in which the father is the head of the family and men have authority over women and children.

Matriarchy
A social system in which the mother is head of the family.
