The Start of the Periodic Table
By the early 1800s, less than 40 elements had been discovered. New ones were being discovered regularly. Scientists started noticing patterns in the way they reacted - their properties. They worked out properties like 'Atomic Mass'
1 of 5
John Newland's Periodic Table
He grouped the elements in order of atomic mass. He used the Law of Octaves- Noticed similarities in properties in every 8th element. Unfortunately, some groups had a mixture of metal and non-metals. It only works for the first few elements.
2 of 5
Mendeleev's Periodic Table
Arranged elements in periodic way. He left gaps where he thought there were undiscovered elements. Otherwise elects would not have similar properties to others in the group. Predicted atomic mass and properties of undiscovered elements.

After Mendeleev
Noble gases discovered. Electrons discovered. Atomic structure discovered. Some in accuracies that still existed solved placing in order of atomic number. Modern periodic table has groups and periods.

The Modern Periodic Table
The modern Periodic Table orders the elements by their atomic numbers. This helps because it groups elements by their properties. In the middle, it has the transition metals. The group number identifies the number of electrons in the outer shell.
