What is peristalsis?
When muscles contract and move the food along the digestive system.

Oesophagus
Its job is to pass food down from the mouth into the stomach

Bile is stored here until it is needed. Food does not pass through here.

Most food is digested here. Digested food is absorbed into the blood stream

Where undigested food food passes through. Water is absorbed from this back into the body.

What are the first stages of digestion?
The mechanical process happens as the mouth chews up the food and mixes it in with saliva to absorb the small molecules.

The 2nd stages of digestion?
The food is passed down through the oesophagus where peristalsis takes place.

Then what happens?
The stomach stores the food. It contains hydrochloric acid that kills germs.

Then?
It is the passed on to the small intestine where it absorbs the digestive food into the bloodstream. Then it passes onto the large intestine where all the undigested food passes through.

Finally?
It is passed into the rectum and released from the anus as poo!
