What are the two ways a rock is broken down?
Mechanical and chemical weathering.
1 of 14
What are the ways that carry out erosional processes called?
Destructive waves.
2 of 14
Describe how a wave-cut platform is created.
First erosion, then forms a wave-cut notch, above is unstable rock. The material collapses and the material is cleared, then a new wave-cut notch is formed, the cliff retreats and then the wave-cut platform is created.
3 of 14
Where do headlands and bays form?
On alternating bands of resistant and less resistant rock along the coast.
4 of 14
Explain the process of a headland turning into a stack?
First it's cracks from erosion, then a cave is formed, turns into an arch, the top of the arch collapses and then a single stack is formed.
5 of 14
Material is transported along the coasts by what process?
Longshore drift.
6 of 14
What carries the material up the beach in the direction of the waves?
The Swash
7 of 14
What carries the material down the beach at right angles, towards the sea?
The backwash
8 of 14
Name the four processes of transportation.
Traction, saltation, suspension and solution.
9 of 14
Waves that deposit more material then they erode are called what?
Constructive waves.
10 of 14
Where do spits form?
At sharp bends in the coast line.
11 of 14
How is a bar formed?
When a spit joins two headlands together.
12 of 14
Name the seven sea defences.
Sea wall, rock armour, groynes, beach nourishment, dune regeneration, march creation and managed retreat.
13 of 14
Give an idea the National Trust has to manage coastal areas from tourist erosion.
