The Cell Cycle

?
What are the two main stages of cell division?
Nuclear Division and Cell Division
1 of 19
What is nuclear division?
Where the nucleus divides. There are two types called mitosis and meiosis.
2 of 19
What is cell division?
Where the whole cell divides
3 of 19
What must happen before the nucleus divides?
DNA must replicate
4 of 19
What is the semiconservative model of DNA?
When half of the origional DNA has been saved and built into the new DNA molecule
5 of 19
What does the enzyme DNA helicase contribute to the semiconservative model?
It causes the two strands to seperate by breaking the hydrogen bonds between the bases.
6 of 19
What enzyme joins up the nucleotides?
DNA Polymerase
7 of 19
What is the importance of mitosis?
It makes daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cells
8 of 19
What is mitosis essential for?
Growth, Differentiation and Repair
9 of 19
What are the five stages of mitosis?
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase
10 of 19
Name the four stages of Interphase
Cell is actively synthesising proteins. Chromosones invisable. Prior to mitosis. DNA Replicates.
11 of 19
Name the four stages of Prophase
Chromosones become visable. Nuclear envelope disintegrates. Nucleolus disappears. Centrioles(produce the spindle fibres) move to each pole.
12 of 19
Name the two stages of Metaphase
Spindle forms. Chromosones line up on the equator of the cell.
13 of 19
Name the two stages of Anaphase
Spindle fibres attached to chromatids contract. Chromosones are pulled towards poles.
14 of 19
Name the four stages of Telophase
Chromatids reach poles and become indistinct. Nuclear envelope reforms. Nucleolus reforms. Spindle disintergrates.
15 of 19
Name the three stages of the cell cycle
Interphase, Nuclear Division and Cell Division
16 of 19
What are the three stages of interphase in the cell cycle?
First growth phase when proteins are synthesised. Synthesis phase when DNA is replicated. Second growth phase, where organelles grow and divide and energy stores are increased
17 of 19
What happens during nuclear division in the cell cycle?
When nucleus divides, either into two (mitosis) or four (meiosis)
18 of 19
What happens during cell division in the cell cycle?
Process by which whole cell divides into two (mitosis) or four (meiosis)
