top part of body, separated from abdomen by diaphragm

trachea splits into two tubes called bronchi, one going to each lung

bronchi split progressively into bronchioles

intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract, thorax volume increases which decreases pressure which draws air in

ventilation is breathing out
intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax, thorax volume decreases which decreases pressure so air is forced out

air goes in, muscles between ribs pull ribcage and sternum up and out, diaphragm flattens

breathing out
air is forced out, ribcage and sternum drop in and down and diaphragm moves up

artificial ventilators
move air into or out of the lungs, help people who cant breathe
