Tropical Rainforests
High levels of precipitation all yr, high temps, huge variety of broad leaved plants, dominated by trees with other plants competing for light, either side of equator
1 of 7
Temperate Forests
Precipitation all yr, seasonal variations in temp summer - hot, winter - cold, deciduous trees that lose their leaves in autumn
2 of 7
Boreal Forests
Higher latitudes - sun's rays are weak, warm summers (15 degrees), cold winters - below freezing, coniferous trees with needle like leaves to adapt to cold and prevent excess water loss, low levels of precipitation
3 of 7
Tropical Grasslands
Hot all yr, recieves some rainfall but always with a dry season, tall grasses with drought adapted shrubs and trees
4 of 7
Temperate Grasslands
Hot in summer, v. cold in winter, v. few trees/shrubs, most rainfall in late spring/summer
5 of 7
Deserts
V. hot, little rainfall, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn - hot air sinks to Earth's surface & sun's rays relatively conc. Plants with water storing features - spines rather than leaves, extensive root systems
6 of 7
Tundra
Within Arctic Circle, v. low temps - sun's rays most dispersed over larger area (less conc), few plants survive - mainly mosses and lichens
