Gothic setting - Shows an isolated community whose lives revolve around superstition. Pathetic fallacy of the weather and the country causing the people within it to be cold-hearted.

Archetype and epithet of 'good child' plainly suggests that she is unfaulted; perhaps giving us more reason to suggest she will become naive.

Suggest the girl is the only strength against the wolf. Highlights her strong inner nature

1. Stage of metamorphosis - suggest it has always been qualities of human inside the werewolf 2. People grow old, but it is like they are transformed - further highlights the societal fear of feminine old age

She is young, so she will prosper, but eventually she will become old and be crucified by society (like the grandmother). Carter wants this cycle to stop. There's a sense of the young girl taking status and economic stability of the old woman
