The Theory of evolution

?
When did Darwin publish his theory of evolution by natural selection?
1859
1 of 9
What were Darwin's 4 key observations?
1. Organisms produce more offspring than survive 2.There is variation in the characteristics of members of the same species 3. Some of these characteristics can be passed on from one generation to the next. 4.best adapted individuals survive
2 of 9
What was his theory based on his observations?
1. variation in phenotypes 2.selection pressures create a struggle for survival 3. Better adapted=better survival and reproductive success 4. over time adaption becomes more frequent which leads to evolution over generations
3 of 9
Who contributed to the theory of evolution?
Alfred Russel Wallace. He came up with idea of natural selection. him and Darwin published papers together on evolution. His observations provided lots of evidence to support the theory of evolution by natural selection.
4 of 9
What three pieces of evidence provide evidence to support evolution?
Fossil records (arrange in chronological order and changes in organism can be seen). DNA evidence(Organisms that diverged more recently have closer DNA) Molecular evidence(proteins and antibodies that are similar= organism diverge more recently)
5 of 9
What are pesticides?
Chemicals that kill pests (insects that damage crops)
6 of 9
How can the evolution of pesticide resistance be explained by natural selection?
1. there is variation in insects. Genetic mutations= some of population naturally pesticide resistant. 2.population exposed to pesticide=pesticide resistant survive to reproduce 3.Alleles that causes pesticide resistance passed on to next generation
7 of 9
What implications does pesticide resistance cause for humans?
1.crop infestations with pesticide resistant insects are harder to control.2. if disease carry insects become pesticide resistant spread of disease could increase disease spread 3.population of insects could become resistant to all pesticides in use.
8 of 9
How can you prevent a population of insects pr pathogens becoming resistant to all pesticides or drugs?
create new pesticides and drugs to treat them with but this takes time and costs a lot of money.
