What is the crust?
The outer layer of the Earth in which we live on
2 of 20
What is the thickness of the crust?
Between 5 to 10km under oceans, and up to 70km under continents
3 of 20
What are the two types of crust?
Oceanic and continental
4 of 20
What is oceanic crust?
An occasional broken layer of basaltic rocks known as sima (silica and magnesium)
5 of 20
What is continental crust?
Bodies of mainly granitic rocks known as sial (silica and aluminium)
6 of 20
What is the lithosphere?
The zone that tectonics are formed, the crust and upper mantle together
7 of 20
What is the mantle?
This it the widest section of the Earth
8 of 20
How thick is the mantle?
2900km
9 of 20
What state are the rocks in?
Silicate rocks are in a thick, liquid state, which becomes denser with depth
10 of 20
What is the asthenosphere?
Part of the upper mantle, where rocks are rheid
11 of 20
What happens to density as you go down into the lower mantle?
It increases
12 of 20
What is the core?
The centre and hottest part of the Earth
13 of 20
What temperatures can the core reach?
5000 degrees celcius
14 of 20
What is the core made up of?
Mainly iron and nickle
15 of 20
How dense is the core?
Four times as dense as the crust
16 of 20
What is the core split up into?
The outer core and the inner core
17 of 20
What is a major cause for the Earth's activity?
The core's internal heat
18 of 20
What is the greatest source of heat energy within the Earth?
Radioactivity- Decay of Uranium, Thorium, Potassium, etc..
