Explain the structure of an atom
An atom is made up of a central nucleas which contains protons and neutrons. There are energy levels/ orbits around an atoms nucleas that electrons flow around. Submatoric particles are not evenly distributed in an atom.
1 of 11
What are protons?
Submatoric particles with positive charges that are found in an atoms nucleas.
2 of 11
What are neutrons?
Submatoric particles that have a neutral charge and are found in an atoms nucleas.
3 of 11
What are electrons?
Submatoric particles with negative charges. These orbit around a nucleas on shells.
4 of 11
What are the charges and masses for each of the submatoric particles?
-Protons: +1 charge and a mass of 1, - Neutrons: 0 charge and a mass of 1, - electrons: -1 charge and a mass 0 1/1835.
5 of 11
What is the overall charge for atoms? Explain why?
Atoms have an overall neutral charge because the number of protons are equal to the number of electrons.
6 of 11
What is the overall charge for nucleas of an atom? Explain why?
Overall, the nucleas is positively charge because it's made up of positive and neutral charged submatoric particles.
7 of 11
Explain where most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in?
In the nucleas because it contains protons and neutrons and electrons have very little mass.
8 of 11
Explain what the mass number of an atom is?
The total number of protons and neutrons found in a nucleas.
9 of 11
Explain what the atomic number of an atom is?
The number of protons in a nucleas.
10 of 11
How can you determine different elements?
Each element is unique to each other in terms of the type of atom its made up of. Elements of the same type will have the same atomic number.
