1 of 5
Causes
Along Tropic of Cancer = (Long dry season - 9 months followed by wet season - 3 months) area of permanent high pressure (holds no moisture). Global warming - Has been getting drier over the past 40 years. Migration due to war (Niger, Nigeria, Mali)
2 of 5
Continuation...
Deforestation - 80% water is recycled back through evapotranspiration. If there are no trees = less evapotranspiration = drought. Population increase (doubling every 20 years)
3 of 5
Effects
Nutrients in soil can be removed by wind or water. Salt build up makes it harder for plant growth. Vegetation is damaged. Causes famine. Flooding
4 of 5
Management
Bunds (low stone walls) used in crop growing regions of Burkina Faso ad Mali. They prevent rain from washing the top soil away. The Great Green Wall is 15km wide on average. It would halt desertification and increase plant growth.
