What is the difference between disciple and apostle?
A disciple is one who learns. A apostle is someone who is sent.

Levi was a tax collector. Tax collectors were hated as they were seen as traitors and often dishonest. Religious leaders saw Levi as a sinner an outcast, yet Js called him to be a disciple. Levi immediately responded.

They celebrated with a meal at Levi's house. Many of Levi's tax collector friends joined them. This annoyed Jewish leaders. Engaging with outcasts made Js religiously impure. The Pharisees asked the disciples 'Why does he eat with such people?'.

Why was this answer clever?
He knew he had to be careful in his reply as if he opposed the payment of tax he would be reported and arrested, but if he supported it he would have lost the support of ordinary Jews. Jews had a duty to both State + God and Js gave them the decision

Why was this story important to 1st Century Christians?
Js' teaching on the payment of tax applied to the question of obedience to state authorities. Christians believed they were members of the KoG. Did this mean they should ignore the State's demands even if it meant death? Christians had duties to both

He did this so that they could support one another, but also because under Jewish law, any account of an event needed 2 witnesses

Why did he tell them not to take unnecessary items?
-These items would slow them down -He wanted them to rely on God, as Js did, that he would provide -This was a lesson for the future, when they no longer had Js' physical presence

Jews did this when returning home from foreign lands so that the foreign dust would not contaminate the Jewish soil. This showed that those who rejected them were excluded from the KoG and should change their minds before too late
