Facts about the tsunami
Occurred in the Indian ocean on the 26th December 2004. Affected countries such as Sri Lanka, India, Thailand etc. 9000 tourists from Australia and countries in Europe including Germany and Sweden

Causes
The Indian plate subducted beneath the Burma plate underneath the Indian Ocean causing a 8.9 magnitude earthquake. 34m high and travelled the distance of 500km/h.

228,000 were declared dead or missing

Extensive flooding

Primary impacts (Buildings)
Buildings were destroyed especially in the town of Banda Aceh, Indonesia was completely destroyed

The coral reef was severely damaged due to the extensive waves, this affects the ecosystem

Sea water has inundated the rivers making them poisoned and undrinkable. This lead to many fish species dying reducing biodiversity

Secondary impacts (tourism)
Tourism has reduced immensely as infrastructure has been destroyed and so has the land. Many ancient buildings in India were dilapidated meaning that there was a loss in tourism

Secondary impacts (employment)
Many people immediately became unemployed and especially fishers had a loss in fishing industry as many of the fish species had died and a loss in fishing boats. 66% of the fishing fleets were destroyed.

Secondary impacts (traditional beliefs)
Traditional beliefs in the affected region included the burial of the dead. However, as many bodies were not found they were not buried. Many people were left traumatised and need several years for recovery

Immediate responses (aid)
$450 million aid provided from western countries for food, shelter and warmth. The world food programme managed to provide food for 1.3 million people. Aid workers and medical professionals went to the region to provide help in hospitals

Immediate responses (Medical)
There was a huge amount of money spent on the medicines to look after the people including sanitation and clean water to prevent diseases and killing more people

Aid workers helped to bury the dead bodies quickly to prevent the spread of diseases

Secondary responses (financial aid)
USA promised to give $950 million however by March 2005, the World bank claimed that $4 billion of aid was behind schedule. Sri Lanka stated that although they recieved short term aid there is no financial support where as Indonesia was being rebuilt

international warning system to alert people e.g. in 2007, the kenyan gov warned local fishermen not to go out into the sea when a 8.4 magnitude earthquake was detected

Secondary responses (education)
Large numbers of people were being educated about the tsunami to prevent as many deaths as possible going onto higher land. Radio signals were put in remote villages so they are protected also
